西港島綫是港島綫的延綫，從上環伸延至堅尼地城，屬於新生代鐵路網的一部份。

本項目需在上環及西營盤之間建造兩條隧道，沿途經過人煙稠密的地區，加上地底埋藏了大量樁柱，可算是港鐵其中一個最艱巨的隧道工程項目。

工程小組考慮到工地的複雜地質狀況，引進了一台特別設計、安全標準十分嚴格的大型泥漿盾式隧道鑽挖機，應付東、西行隧道的鑽挖工程。

項目亦首次在港引進多項環保建築技術，例如首次以水作緩衝，在爆破工程中採用電子引爆技術，同時以大型隔音罩完全覆蓋爆破範圍，阻隔聲浪。此外，工程亦為業界帶來首次在市區以爆破方法挖掘豎井的經驗，為推動可持續建築提供最佳示範。

上環至西營盤隧道工程更是全球首個採用相關隧道拆卸機的項目，拆卸現有的一段掉車隧道。
