Shatin to Central Link Contract no. 1128 Launches FIRST Variable Density TBM
26 August 2016
Following the launch of Shatin to Central Link (SCL) Island Section’s first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in March this year, the second TBM – also the city’s FIRST Variable Density (VaD) TBM launched on 19th August 2016.
This city’s FIRST VaD TBM can adapt to the face density of the slurry to tackle the problems of heterogeneity and shallow ground conditions. Such is an exemplar of our in-house innovations. By adopting two-component annulus grout instead of traditional mortar, the project team can minimise the space required for mixing plant and material storage on site.
This VaD TBM will commence its journey from end August, tunnelling through the city’s busiest districts. It is expected that the mission will be completed in early 2017, reaching an important project milestone.
