Attaining the highest safety standards through innovation
28 April 2016
Dragages Macau won six awards in the recent 5th Macao Construction Safety Award Scheme. Designed to promote safety awareness and inculcate a safety culture in the construction sector, the Scheme is an annual event jointly organised by the Labour Bureau and key industry stakeholders, including various construction associations and professional bodies.
1. Gold Prize* for the Best Occupational Safety and Health Construction Site in the Hotel and Casino Industry
2. Gold Prize* for the Best Safety Management System
3. Gold Prize* for the Best Safety Improvement Project
4. Gold Prize* for the Best Non-Local Safety Management Personnel (QSE Manager – Mr. Stephen CHAN)
5. Silver Prize for the Best Non-Local Safety Management Personnel (Senior Safety Officer – Mr. Jeff LAI)
6. Excellence Award for the Best Local Safety Management Personnel (Senior Site Coordinator/Safety Supervisor – Mr. Antonio WU)
* Gold Prize is the highest rank in the Scheme
In selecting Dragages Macau for these prestigious awards, the Scheme considered each site’s safety management systems, such as its safety policies and training, its promotion of safe practices and its emergency preparedness. In particular, the judges expressed their admiration for Dragages Macau’s innovations and strong team spirit, which set a good standard for all industry players.
In addition to compulsory training courses and promotion of safe practices through seminars and incentive schemes, Dragages Macau has injected innovative solutions into its QSE practices, and is the first in the construction industry to implement this custom-made snagR system in safety inspections.
snagR is a pilot scheme that captures both safety and environmental findings through the use of mobile devices. Once any issues have been rectified, the same platform is also used to record and verify the findings. Results and analysis can likewise be shared with related parties for both record-keeping and as the basis for future enhancements (see the below diagram).
Following the successful implementation of snagR in City of Dreams – Fifth Hotel Tower, Dragages has also extended snagR to other civil projects in Hong Kong.
“We are honoured to be the champion of four categories out of a total of six categories, and I’m very proud of my project team colleagues,” remarked Nicolas Borit, Managing Director of Dragages Macau Limited. “We trust that safety is a shared commitment of all individuals. Our great team spirit, and strong leadership steered by Denis Averlan (Director of Operations – Building Works) and CY Ho (Deputy Project Director), coupled with our innovative solutions, helped us stand out from other nominations. These awards are a high-profile affirmation of our commitment to safety management and to continuously enhancing safety standards through innovation.”
Health & Safety, a Shared Commitment
Stephen Chan – QSE Manager, recipient of the Gold Prize for the Best Non-Local Safety Management Personnel
“This was the first time that we entered this competition. We wanted to share our best practices with other industry players. All project team members are thrilled about the remarkable results. We believe that it’s a testament to the close collaboration between management and frontline colleagues, together with our subcontractors.”
Jeff Lai – Senior Safety Officer, recipient of the Silver Prize for the Best Non-Local Safety Management Personnel
“The successful implementation of worksite safety measures relies on the support of both management and frontline colleagues. I’m glad to see that most safety measures suggested by our QSE team are being implemented on site. Winning these safety awards is recognition of our QSE efforts.”
Antonio Wu – Senior Site Coordinator / Safety Supervisor, recipient of the Excellence Award for the Best Local Safety Management Personnel
“The support of our frontline colleagues is indispensable to our success. I believe that no matter how well we plan, our safety measures would not be in place without proper implementation by our frontline colleagues. In addition to enhancements in safety management, we aim to make all individuals understand what safety means. It’s only through proper management of safety skills that we can perform safely.”
